Macau (MNA) – The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) Typhoon announced this Sunday that Signal No. 8 will remain in force until 09:00 am when it will be changed to Signal No.9.
With the connecting bridges already suspended for traffic, the covered lane of Sai Van Bridge will also be closed for traffic when Signal No. 9 is hoisted.
The SMG also indicated that the wind will gradually intensify as at 08:00 am the super Typhoon Mangkhut was at about 260 kilometres southeast of Macau, and was approaching the territory with Signal No. 10 to be raised at 12:00 pm.
The super will cause great threat to the territory and to the regions of the mouth of the Pearl Rive and it is expected that Mangkhut will approach the territory and cross as close as 100 kilometres to Macau in the afternoon.
The wind speed will oscillate between 63 – 118 km/h or more, with showers strong and frequent.
The red Storm Surge warning remains in effect and it is expected that severe flooding in lowland areas starting from noon of today.
The water level could raise to between 2.0 and 2.5 meters above the pavement, with floods to sustain for a while.
The SMG advised residents to take shelter, stay in the safe and covered place, and stay away from doors and windows in very windy locations, while continuing to follow information about the tropical storm.
As of 7:00 am the Civil Protection Centre recorded 10 incidents, one fallen tree seven cases of falling awnings, windows and other objects, one case of falling scaffolding or other installations in construction sites and one case concenring electrical wiring or power supply.
