Macau (MNA) – Macau and Hong Kong residents can now bind their locally registered UnionPay cards to mobile payment app UnionPay for cashless payment both in and outside their respective cities, UnionPay International has announced.
The extension of the mobile payment service from the Mainland to residents of the Special Administrative Regions (SARs) is a response to the construction of the Greater Bay Area, claimed the group in a press conference held in Hong Kong on Monday.
For the first stage, the service only covers UnionPay cards issued by Bank of China Macau Branch, Banco Nacional Ultramarino (BNU), Guangdong Development Bank Limited, Macau Branch, Bank of China (Hong Kong), Bank of Communications Hong Kong Branch and K & R International Limited.
The group expects that most local banks in Macau and Hong Kong will offer the new UnionPay mobile payment service within this year.
According to the company, UnionPay mobile QuickPass is available at over 10 million POS terminals in Mainland China with the payment method also accepted in 41 countries and regions worldwide.
UnionPay claims that thousands of merchants in Hong Kong and Macau already accept UnionPay QR code payment destined for Mainland Chinese UnionPay card holders, adding that UnionPay QR code payment will be available at more than 10,000 merchants in Hong Kong and Macau by the end of this year.
