Ka-Ho Tunnel Northern Exit

Main section of Ka-Ho tunnel concluded

The main section of the Ka-Ho tunnel has been completed on November 29 of this year, the Infrastructure Development Office (GDI) informed.

A MOP254.1 million (US$31.5 million) contract was awarded to a consortium composed by  China Gezhouba Group No.2 Engineering Co. Ltd. / Zhu Kuan – Fomento Imobiliário, Limitada for the project construction in 2015.

The construction of the tunnel is divided into three sections, namely, the Southern Exterior Section, the Tunnel Section, and the Northern Connection, with the first two now completed

The tunnel section is set to have 500 metres in length, two driving sections in opposite directions – each 20 meters wide, 10 meters high and with two lanes – with its plan having been developed by Consultores de Engenharia Sinomac Limitada.

The initial contract with the consortium estimated the tunnel section finished in November, 2017 however informed that adverse climate conditions and a problem in the supply of explosives after the Tianjin explosion disaster in 2015 caused delays to the project.

CCCC-FHDI Macau, Lda. was in charge of the project’s oversight, and the Institute for the Development and Quality and the Civil Engineering Laboratory of Macau (LECM) are responsible for quality control.

According to the GDI, The main purpose of the project is to facilitate access by residents from Ka-Ho village and vehicles driving towards the Ka-Ho Port Container Terminal so that they will no longer need to circulate along the Ka-Ho Dam Road, Our Lady of Ká Hó, Rua Altinho de Ka-Ho or Estrada do Istmo, directly connecting the area with Cotai east and reducing driving time by about 15 minutes and the traffic load on the these roads.

The Southern Exterior Section project on the Ka-Ho side – which involved road widening, additional sewage and peripheral containment works – was finished in March 2015.

This MOP128.4 million contract was granted to a three company joint venture: Construções E Obras Públicas Min Da, Limitada / Top Builders Internacional, Limitada / Companhia De Construção E Obras De Engenharia Tong Lei, Limitada.

This project will connect Estrada de Nossa Senhora de Ká Hó with the Macau International Airport main avenue, with two viaducts of around 400 meters in length, each with two two-way roads, to be built.
