Melco pledges to achieve carbon neutrality and zero-waste resorts by 2030

Gaming operator Melco Resorts & Entertainment pledges in its ‘Above & Beyond’ 2020 sustainability report to achieve carbon-neutral resorts and zero waste by 2030.

The gaming concessionaire aims to achieve this target by focusing on reducing electricity consumption, improving energy efficiency and transitioning to renewable energy, while supporting innovative technology and sourcing low-carbon initiatives.

According to the report, Melco aims to integrate energy-efficient building facades, heat recovery systems and other measures; expand EV charging stations for guests, colleagues and its electric bus fleet with the goal of having all its vehicles powered by renewable energy; and annually purchase Energy Attributable Certificates and other instruments to balance its energy consumption.

The group states that it achieved a 67 per cent reduction in overproduced food waste over a six month trial at the employee dining rooms of City of Dreams by enforcing innovative technological solutions such as Winnow AI Technology.

‘Improvements from energy efficiency measures resulted in a reduction of annualized electricity consumption of 34,297 MWh in Macau and Manila, equivalent to avoiding over 24,000 metric tonnes of GHG emissions, which is the reduction which would be achieved by taking over 5,200 cars off the road,’ the group added.

Waste generated and diverted through recycling and composting was also said by Melco’s properties to have dropped by 55 and 50 per cent in 2020 and 2019, respectively, although with some help from the Covid-19 pandemic impact in visitation.

The group also aims to source 80 per cent of its procurement choices with sustainable attributes by 2025.

Studies have indicated that the gaming industry is responsible for more than 62 per cent of all annual carbon emissions produced in Macau.
