Mozambique: Police seizes 800kg of illegal gems, two detained

Mozambique’s police have seized 800 kilogrammes of gems illegally mined and detained two people in Manica province, an officer told Lusa on Tuesday.

The quartz stones were extracted in craft mines in Barue district and illegally transported to Chimoio, Manica’s capital, where they would be exported to the Asian market.

“Following our investigation, we realised the product was illegally obtained and transported, because the license was no longer effective”, Manica’s police spokesperson Mateus Mindu told Lusa.

The police arrested a miner and the owner of the transport vehicle, who will be charged for “illegal exploitation of natural resources”, Mindu added.
