Extremist militants waging an insurgency in Mozambique’s northern Cabo Delgado province have in recent months intensified their campaign to create a caliphate in the gas-rich region. The violent rebellion has displaced at least 500,000 people, according to government and claimed more than 2,400 lives, according to the US-based Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED) group, which also has listed 711 organised attacks since the rebellion was launched in 2017.
