Network outage due to cyber attack – CTM

Macau (MNA) – Network outages that were experienced at 9:00 am on May 6 were due to an emergency response system to a cybersecurity attack, said CEO of Companhia de Telecomunicações de Macau (CTM), Vandy Poon Fuk Hei.

The CEO stated that the company is still currently “investigating” the issue, with hundreds of users affected, and with more than 100 complaints received.

The network had been returned to normal in a short period of time.

Poon stressed that network attacks had happened “from time to time” and CTM would do its best to ensure that users were not affected.

In a previous quote given to MNA, Vice President of Legal Affairs and Regulations at CTM, Aguinaldo Wahnon said that the telecommunications company had raised the possibility that with technological advances, “normal cybersecurity issues” could be an area of concern.
