New Qingmao Zhuhai-Macau Border opens

The city’s new border crossing checkpoint with Guangdong province, the Qingmao Border, will open to the public from 3:00pm today (Wednesday), with authorities believing some 100,000 people will use it daily.

The new round-the-clock border is adjacent to the Gongbei Border Gate Checkpoint, at the junction of Avenida do Comendador Ho Yin and Estrada do Canal dos Patos.

With a daily capacity for handling 200,000 people it will include 50 automated inbound channels and 50 automated outbound channels able to carry out passenger clearance services in some 20 seconds, plus two staffed counters in each direction.

Macau and Hong Kong residents with valid visas to mainland China will be able to use the automatic channels at the new post and reduce the nearby pressure at the Gongbei Border checkpoints.

Of the 5.8 million visitors that passed through Macau in 2020, 3.8 million used the Gongbei Border checkpoint.

However, the new Qingmao Border Post can only be used exclusively by mainland China, Macau and Hong Kong residents and can’t be used by Taiwanese residents or foreign nationals.

There are six bus stops next to the border post and 16 bus lines will stop near the new border.

The border project involved almost MOP4 billion (US$500 million) handed to Chinese state-owned enterprise Guangdong Nam Yue Group Corporation Limited via three separate contracts covering the building of the infrastructure on both sides, the water channel works and a Guangdong-Macau products exhibition centre.

This is the second new border with Zhuhai to open in two years after the new Hengqin Port opened in 2020, with a capacity for 220,000 daily crossings.
