No information of data sale in Macau: Monetary Authority

The Monetary Authority of Macau (AMCM) announced on Friday it has no information pointing to the sale of the personal data of customers by local banks. The announcement came after, in Hong Kong, the local regulator announced that six banks had sold the personal data of 600,000 customers to insurance companies. “In view of reports made by media of the neighbouring region recently on banks releasing customer information for revenue, this authority has contacted the regulator there and had an initial understanding with banks operating locally. We have been given to understand that such practices have not been applied to bank customers in Macau,” the AMCM stressed. “This authority will continue to pay close attention to the development of the incident and take follow-up action deemed appropriate in conjunction with the Office for Personal Data Protection (GPDP),” the Monetary Authority stressed. The GPDP is already investigating whether any of the banks operating in Macau have sold the personal data of customers to third parties.
