Non-higher education schools allowed to restart online classes from next week

The Education and Youth Development Bureau (DSEDJ) announced today (Thursday) that starting from next week, non-higher education schools will be able to gradually restart online classes.

“Schools should follow their school operation suspension guidelines, according to their situation and gradually start home learning programs,” the DSEDJ Non-Tertiary Education Director, Wong Ka Ki, said in today’s pandemic update press conference.

However, the DSEDJ representative pointed out that students from kindergarten to the third grade of primary school and special education students should not see their normal school curriculum completely adapted to online courses, with schools asked to provide appropriate methods that can maintain the learning progression of students.

Non-tertiary school classes were initially scheduled to restart presential classes on October 4, however, the discovery of new confirmed Covid-19 cases led to the suspension of the restart.

The sudden reversal of the scheduled easing of entry restrictions for people entering Zhuhai via Macau also led to more than 1,000 cross-border students and some parents being left stranded in Macau and unable to return without having to complete a 14-day quarantine.

Currently, more than 500 students and guardians, who do not have to receive assistance to find a temporary place to stay, and are being accommodated in youth hostels and dormitories of educational institutions, receiving daily items as well as the meals they need.
