The number of guests that checked into hotels & guesthouses has increased by 15.5 per cent between May and June of this year, with some 134,000 guests reported, data provided by the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) today (Wednesday) indicated.
However, that number still represents an 88 per cent year-on-year fall, as the Covid-19 pandemic continues to impact visitor numbers in the SAR.
Of the 134,000 guests reported in June, 67,000 came from mainland China and 11,000 from Hong Kong.
About 53,000 guests in June were local guests, a number that even grew by 4.2 per cent year-on-year, a rise the DSEC attributed to the accommodation promotions offered to residents by some hotels.
Howveer, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms in June reached only 11.8 per cent., less 0.5 percentage points than in the previous month, but with more 1,000 rooms available, totalling some 35,000 rooms.
In the first half-year of 2020, the average occupancy rate of guest rooms was 27.2 per cent, a drop of 63.9 percentage points year-on-year, with the number of guests of hotels & guesthouses declining by 73.5 per cent to 1,830,000.
