Pandemic the most serious global threat since Cold War – Lionel Leong

Former Secretary for Economy and Finance, Lionel Leong, stated in a seminar held by the Macau New Chinese Youth Association that the Covid-19 pandemic was the “most serious global threat since the Cold War” and will speed up the “evolution of international relations”.

Leong acted as a guest speaker for a special lecture to discuss the impact of the epidemic worldwide on October 15, with the former government official expressed the epidemic has triggered in-depth reflections over globalization, while also highlighting the fragility and development resilience of human society.

The former government official was also said to have discussed the economic development in the post-epidemic era with a group of local young students.

Leong acted as Secretary of Economy and Finance of the Macau SAR from December 2014 to December 2019 stating at the time that he would focus on completing his master thesis and possible contribute following his term in office, but adding he could maybe contribute “in different areas”.

He has since then been involved with the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), helping set up a new science and technology conference under the Asian organization to be held in Macau between November 9-11.

The ‘International Science, Technology and Innovation Forum (ISTIF)’ will take place at the Service Platform Complex for Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries and at the Grand Hyatt Hotel, with Leong currently its Organising Committee President.
