The proportion of local employees in the middle and senior management positions of the ‘Big Six’ gaming concessionaires is currently at 89 per cent, Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong said today (Thursday) at the Legislative Assembly, according to TDM Radio.
The percentage is according to the government’s target of no lower than 85 per cent of staff represented by locals, with Secretary Lei noting that the percentage has kept a rising trend in recent years.
As of December 2020, there were 9,940 middle and high-level managers in the six gaming operators, and 89 per cent of them were local employees.
Gaming operators also hired 26,102 non-resident workers – excluding construction employees – as of Dec 2020, accounting for about 24 per cent of the total workers in the city and 9,008 people less than a year earlier
Macau SAR unemployment rates reached record levels in 2020 as the pandemic wreaked havoc in the local tourism and gaming industry, going from 1.7 per cent in 2019 to 2.9 per cent by the end of the year.
In the same period, the unemployment rate for local residents also increased to 4 per cent, with the underemployment rate at 5.4 per cent.
