Philippines logs 4,496 new COVID-19 cases, death toll nears 41,000

The Philippines’ Department of Health (DOH) reported 4,496 new COVID-19 infections on Tuesday, pushing the number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 2,731,735.

The DOH also reported that 211 more people died from COVID-19 complications, bringing the country’s death toll to 40,972.

Tuesday’s caseload is the lowest since July 28. “The relatively low cases today is due to lower laboratory output on Sunday,” the DOH said, adding seven laboratories failed to submit data.

The DOH reported its highest ever daily tally on Sept. 11, with 26,303 cases. The Philippines, which has around 110 million population, has tested more than 20.5 million people since the outbreak in January 2020.
