Portugal: Major wildfire dominated after burning 20,000 ha

The wildfire that broke out on Sunday in Proença-a-Nova and spread to the municipalities of Oleiros and Castelo Branco was said to have been dominated today, according to Civil Protection.

The fire was reported as dominated today around 09:00 a.m., the District Command of Relief Operations (CDOS) of Castelo Branco told Lusa.

In the field, at 09:30, 920 vehicles and two aircraft means were kept operational, according to the Civil Protection page.

The fire started on Sunday in Proença-a-Nova and extended to the neighbouring municipalities of Castelo Branco and Oleiros.

On Tuesday, the Civil Protection stated that the fire was with about 90% dominated but it was more than 60 kilometres long.

In the municipality of Oleiros alone, the City Council estimates that about 20,000 hectares of forest were burned.
