Portugal: Parliament approves resolution to adopt measures against fake news

Portugal’s parliament approved on Wednesday a draft resolution by the ruling Socialist Party recommending the government adopts measures in Portugal in line with the European Union’s plan to combat fake news.

The draft resolution saw votes against by the Communist Party and the Green Party, while the Social Democrats abstained and the Socialist Party, the PSD party and People-Animals-Nature party voted in favour.

The Socialists proposed that measures are taken to guarantee cybersafety and structures and equipment to prepare the next European, regional and legislative elections in Portugal, according to the resolution project handed into parliament.

The resolution also proposed that this be one of the measures adopted by the government in articulation with the EU’s plan to intensify the “fight against fake news created on digital platforms.”
