Portugal: Reservoirs in south with lowest October water levels

The amount of stored water rose in October only in the Ave river catchment area and fell in the other 11 compared to September, according to data from the National Water Resources Information System (SNIRH).

Of the 59 reservoirs monitored, three have water availability above 80% of the total volume and 30 have availability below 40% of the total volume.

The Sado river basin (25.6%) had the lowest water availability at the end of October, followed by the Barlavento (30.7%), Lima (33.9%), Arade (40.3%), Oeste (40.4%), and Mira (46.9%) river basins.

The Cávado (62.7%), Guadiana (61.7%) and Douro (60.9%) basins had the highest levels of storage at the end of October.

Above 50 percent of storage were the Ave (51.1%), Tejo (54.3%) and Mondego (58.0%) basins.

The reservoirs with lowest water availability were located in October in the Guadiana and Sado basins.

In the Guadiana basin, the Abrilongo reservoir (municipality of Campo Maior, district of Portalegre) had in October only 1.8% of water availability and the Lucefit reservoir (Alandroal, district of Évora) had 4.5%.

In the Sado basin, the Campilhas reservoir (municipality of Santiago do Cacém, in Setúbal) had in October 6.6% of water availability and Monte da Rocha (municipality of Ourique, in Beja) had 8.5%.

Storages in October 2019 by river basin are lower than the October storage averages (1990/91 to 2018/19), except for the Cávado, Douro and Arade basins.

Each river basin may correspond to more than one reservoir.
