Portugal: Seventy people arrested since beginning of state of emergency

Portugal’s police forces have arrested 70 people for the crime of disobedience in the last week, as part of the state of emergency that began on 22 March, decreed due to Covid-19 disease, the Ministry of Internal Administration said on Sunday.

In the same period, from 22 March to 6 p.m. on Sunday, 1,546 establishments were closed for noncompliance with the established norms, the statement said.

Regarding Saturday’s balance sheet, one more person was arrested on Sunday, and 37 more establishments were ordered to close.

The data released does not include road surveillance operations, or others carried out over the weekend.

The arrests were for not obeying the mandatory confinement and other situations of disobedience or resistance.

The ministry, considering the imperative need for everyone to contribute to containing the contagion of Covid-19, insists on strict compliance with the measures imposed by the state of emergency, the communiqué said.

The new coronavirus, responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic, has already infected more than 667,000 people around the world, of whom more than 31,000 have died.

In Portugal, according to the assessment made on Sunday by the Directorate-General of Health, there were 119 deaths, 19 more than the day before (+19%), and there were 5.962 cases of confirmed infections, 792 more than on Saturday (+15,3%).
