Portugal: Theatres, cinemas can reopen with all rows occupied – minister

Theatres, concert halls and cinemas in Portugal can reopen, from Monday, with all rows occupied and free spaces between spectators, who will be required to wear a mask, according to the minister of culture.

Open-air shows will have to have seats marked.

After more than two months, theatres and shows will be able to reopen with marked seats, all the rows occupied and free spaces between spectators, except for family groups, Graça Fonseca said on Tuesday in statements to Lusa.

The use of a mask will be mandatory for the audience and spaces will be disinfected between shows or sessions.

In the case of the theatres, there must be two meters between the stage and the front row and the performers and technical teams do not have to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) on stage, but rather at the entrance and exit of the stage.

The rules change regarding outdoor cultural events. In that case, the wearing of a mask is not mandatory for the audience.

The area where the event takes place, such as a square or park, must have boundaries, as well as the places where people must be (can be markings on the floor, benches, chairs) and there must be 1.5 meters between people, or family groups.

The reopening of concert halls, theatres, and cinemas, as well as the resumption of open-air cultural events, is foreseen in the third phase of the government’s “Easing Plan”.

The general rules for reopening, which can take place from Monday onwards, have been defined by the Ministry of Culture in conjunction with the Directorate-General of Health.
