Sands, Nam Kwong and mainland authorities to hold commerce and retail forum in September

A consumption exhibition & global bay areas forum, will be jointly held in September this year by Sands China, state-owned enterprise Nam Kwong Group Company and mainland commerce authorities, as a practical measure to “implementation the national strategy” and “stimulate economic development in the region”.

The Hengqin Global Bay Areas Forum is set to be held in the Guangdong-Macau In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin from September 7 to 8, while the China (Macau) High-Quality Consumption Exhibition (CHCE) will be held at the Venetian Macau Cotai Expo and Shoppes at Four Seasons from September 9 to 11.

The forum will focus on major GBA topics, including the “high-quality lifestyle in the GBA”, cross-border e-commerce, and “political benefits of the zone”.

Several topics regarding economic development in the post-pandemic era and industry development will also be discussed, including scientific and technological innovation, finance, accommodation, “big health”, sports and leisure, cultural tourism and the MICE industry.

Meanwhile, the consumption exhibition, is “different from other large-scale expos” in terms of business models, as it will integrate both “B2C (business-to-customer)” and “B2B (business-to-business)” marketing models, allowing consumers to conduct transactions directly on-site, Sands China’s CEO Wilfred Wong Ying Wai indicated in today(Thursday)’s press conference.

Also, the CEO stressed that visitors continue to maintain a steady level of consumption of high-end goods in Macau since the luxury sales figures in Sands have actually surpassed pre-pandemic levels.

“Covering various aspects closely related to the quality of life including clothing, food, accommodation, transportation, travelling, shopping and entertainment, CHCE’s “one event, two locations” approach will be a first for the global MICE industry,” Wong said, “we believe that CHCE will encourage more Macau enterprises to tap into the GBA market, thus helping Macau better integrated into the overall development of the country while laying the groundwork for Macau’s economic recovery in the post-pandemic era.”

Song Xiao Dong, Vice-president of Nam Kwong Group, also emphasized that the company will use CHCE to strengthen the cooperation between mainland enterprises and the SAR’s industrial and commercial sectors, with the “MICE+” platform effects to contribute to local economic recovery and diversification.

According to the press release, the event is initiated in order to “implement President Xi’s important instructions” concerning the development of Hengqin through Guangdong-Macau cooperation, further implement the “important deployment” of “one country, two systems”, and support the development of the cooperation zone following the state’s instructions.

The Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area and the Master Plan of the Development of the Guangdong-Macau In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, both proposed that the GBA should “hold an international premium quality consumer good expo and a world bay area forum, establish a convention and exhibition platform with influence across the globe”, and “support cooperation between Guangdong and Macau to establish a quality imported consumer product trading center, and create an industrial ecosystem for trading quality consumer goods”.
