The prime minister of Sao Tome and Principe, Jorge Bom Jesus, on Wednesday congratulated the President-elect, Carlos Vila Nova, on his victory in the second round of the presidential election last Sunday and said he was available for “all collaboration and loyalty”.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Vila Nova on his victory, and I hope that after taking office, he will, in fact, be the president of all São Tomeans,” Bom Jesus said in a video posted on social media.
The PM refused to comment earlier this week on the provisional results of the presidential elections held on Sunday, released in the early hours of Monday by the National Electoral Commission (CEN), claiming he was unaware of the data.
“As I have said, the organs of sovereignty are independent, but all these organs are interdependent because the great objective is to work for the development of Sao Tome and Príncipe,” he said today in the statement broadcast on the government’s official Facebook page.
Carlos Vila Nova was elected on Sunday President of Sao Tome and Principe, in the second round of voting, with 57.54%, with a total of 45,481 votes, according to provisional results released by the National Electoral Commission early Monday morning. His opponent, Guilherme Posser da Costa, supported by the so-called ‘new majority’ parties, obtained 42.46% of the vote, with a total of 33,557 votes.
