SJM named title sponsor of Macao Open golf tournament in October

SJM Holdings will become a title sponsor of the Macao Open set to return for three days in October, according to its organiser.

In a statement issued by the Asian Tour and IMG – the former one of the leading golf tours in the world and the latter a sporting event management company – the Macau Golf will take place between 12 and 15 October at the Macau Golf and Country Club, which is a business unit of SJM’s parent company Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau, S.A. or known as STDM.

SJM will be its title sponsor for the next three editions of the tournament, with the backing of the Sports Bureau of Macao and the Macao Golf Association.

The 20th edition of the SJM Macao Open will feature a 144-player field vying for a prize of US$1 million (MOP8.05 million).

The tournament has attracted an impressive roster of global stars over the years, including Major winners Ernie Els, Nick Faldo, Darren Clarke, John Daly, Padraig Harrington, Vijay Singh and Nick Price, as well as prolific international winners including Miguel-Angel Jimenez, Branden Grace, Ian Poulter and Thongchai Jaidee.

Past winners include Lee Westwood, Colin Montgomerie, and China’s Liang Wen-chong and two-time winner Zhang Lian-Wei.

Cho Minn Thant, CEO and commissioner of the Asian Tour, expressed his delight at the return of the event, and thanked the government, SJM, the Macao Golf Association, and IMG for collectively reinstating the tournament.

President of the Sports Bureau, Pun Weng Kun said that bringing back the long-running golf tournament to Macao had been an important priority.
