Unemployed population rises in retail and gaming for March-May

The general unemployment rate has risen to 2.4 per cent in March-May, with the unemployment rate for local residents reaching 3.4 per cent, the Statistics and Census Bureau (DSEC) indicated.

The numbers reported representing the highest unemployment rate since 2011, as the Covid-19 pandemic greatly impacted the local economy.

In the same period, the number of the unemployed grew by 800 to 9,700 from the previous period, with most of the unemployed population previously engaged in retail and in Gaming & Junket Activities.

However, employment in the construction sector still saw an increase in the period under review
