Macau (MNA) – WeChat Pay, the mobile payment service of Tencent’s WeChat, started to be accepted on Wednesday, November 1, in 136 outlets in the several properties of casino operator Galaxy Entertainment Group in the Macau SAR, the company announced in a press conference in Galaxy Macau today.
A partnership between both companies and Chinese bank ICBC makes it now possible to use the mobile system to pay for services in hotels, restaurants, and other commercial establishments in Galaxy Macau, Broadway, and StarWorld.
WeChat users will also be able to use the services in hotels such as Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, Banyan Tree, and Okura, in addition to hotels located in the Galaxy, Broadway, and StarWorld complexes.
The service will be equally accepted in the restaurants Otto e Mezzo Bombana, Lai Heen, Man Ho, and Yamazato.
Street food stalls at Broadway are also to accept the payment system.
The service would only be available for Wechat payment users who have their e-wallet pegged with a Chinese Yuan account registered in Mainland.
When asked about when Macau citizens could use Wechat payment services, Zheng Kai, deputy chief executive officer of ICBC (Macau), said discussions are ongoing, and the matter will be addressed by relevant government departments, banks, as well as Tencent.
