Yellow taxi company scrambles to recruit drivers

Yellow taxi operator Vang Iek Radio Taxi Co is at risk of losing its licence unless it can recruit enough full-time drivers to keep 100 on-call cabs on the road, our sister publication Business Daily reports. The Transport Bureau will renew the company’s special licence to operate yellow taxis in February only if Vang Iek can field 100 on-call taxis. The bureau says the company has recruited between 40 and 50 full-time drivers but requires up to three drivers to keep one car on the road for a day. Vang Iek executive director Eugenio Cheng Wing Chiu has blamed the company’s recruitment problems on a labour shortage.
