Jobs in retailing surge by 5,833 last year

More shops employed more people last year than they did in 2011, the annual Wholesale and Retail Survey has found. The survey said there were 5,997 retail establishments, 230 more than in 2011, and they employed 29,979 people, an additional 5,833 staff. Wholesaling and retailing establishments numbered 10,930, or 32 fewer than in 2011. There were 1,703 market and street stalls, a fall of 72 stalls. Wholesaling and retailing industry receipts grew to MOP86.41 billion (US$10.82 billion), 28 percent more than in 2011. Expenditure was MOP78.36 billion, also 28 percent more.
