Macau “more exciting” than Las Vegas: Steve Wynn

Steve Wynn, the chairman and chief executive officer of Wynn Macau and its parent company Wynn Resorts said that the Macau gaming market is “more exciting” than Las Vegas. “[In Macau] there are more transactions at the high end, [there are] more complicated issues. It’s more orderly in Las Vegas but it’s more exciting [in Macau],” he said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. According to Mr Wynn, there are “profoundly real” cultural differences in business practices between both markets. “You come to China with your hat in your hand. They hire outside help when they need it in this country. In my case, they wanted to broaden Macau. Well, lucky you if you happen to have what they’re looking for, and they invite you and allow you to participate. I was fortunate enough to be identified as a person who could be useful.” Meanwhile, Mr Wynn rebuffed the idea of stepping down as chief executive officer of Wynn any time soon. “I’m too young. I’m 69 and I got married [a few] weeks ago. I’m healthy and I’m going out with my boots on.” Even so, he gave some hints about who could be his successor: “There are a score of young people who are very smart and very healthy, in Nevada and Macau. Incidentally, Linda Chen [chief operating officer of Wynn Macau] is on the board of the parent company. So if you ask me who could do it? A Chinese woman.”
