Macau | Chan Meng Kam appointed new honorary consul for Guinea-Bissau

Macau (MNA) – Former legislator and local gaming businessman, Chan Meng Kam, has been appointed as the new honorary consul for Guinea-Bissau, Chinese-language newspaper Macao Daily News reported.

According to the report, the Commissioner of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Macau SAR, Ye Dabo, provided the businessman with the necessary certificate for his new functions, with Mr Chan to focus on helping foster business between Macau, Mainland China and the African country.

A previous Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Forum Macao) release informed that Guinea-Bissau’s Ambassador to Beijing, Malam Sambu, introduced the new honorary consul during a visit to Macau on August 8, when he held a meeting with the Permanent Secretariat of Forum Macao.

At the time, the diplomat said that he would like to see Chinese companies invest more in Guinea-Bissau, using Macau as a platform.

Macau News Agency (MNA) inquired Forum Macao on this appointment but no response was provided when this article was published.

The former legislator replaced local businessman John Lo Seng Chung in the diplomatic position, with the Director-General of the Excelente International Group Ltd. having been the honorary consul of Guinea Bissau in Macau since 2000.

MNA called the former Guinea-Bissau Honorary Consulate Office in Macau at King Xiu Garden and was informed the office had already changed to an undisclosed location.

John Lo was previously involved in a project to build a US$37.5 million four-star hotel on the main avenue of the capital of Guinea-Bissau, with construction to have started in 2015.
