Macau | DSPA electronic material recycling scheme collected more than 16,000 items

Macau (MNA) – The Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) revealed this Wednesday it has collected more than 16,000 items during its trial scheme for collecting and recycling electronic communication and technology devices as of March 2018.

The scheme was launched on October 9, 2017 and is set to gather some 50,000 items totalling some 7,000 tonnes of material by its conclusion on September 27 of this year Targeted items are cell phones, television sets, computers, printer toner cartridges, as well as printers and scanners.

The DSPA has set up four collection points for the scheme – two in Macau, one in Taipa and another in Seac Pai Van – while also providing a collection van that will be parked in 16 different areas of the city on a rotating schedule.

Collected used computers of the latest models which meet the DSPA-determined donation requirements will be offered to local charity groups after they have been fixed, the Bureau stated.

The remaining computers will be dismantled by contracted companies with the resulting recyclable components and materials to be transported for further recycling and transformation in other regions. The target recycling rate is set at some 90 per cent.

Sociedade Chong Heng Vannex (Macau), Limitada [Zhongxing Vannex (Macau) Limited] was awarded MOP4 million to run the trial scheme, with a public tender to be opened after the trial is finished to select a company to operate the scheme on a regular basis.
