Macau | DSPA electronic material recycling scheme collected 7,646 items in three months

Macau (MNA) – The Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) trial scheme for collecting and recycling electronic communication and technology materials amassed 7,646 items between October 9 and December 31.

During the mentioned period the scheme collected 1,317 home computers, 346 portable computers, 710 cathode ray tubes / LCD screens, 261 printers and 43 digital scanners.

The most recent computer models collected that meet donation requirements indicated by the DSPA will be selected and, after appropriate treatment, donated to local charity associations.

Some 4,939 collected items or 65 per cent of the total included diverse items; namely, fixed telephones, transformers, fans, compact disc players, magnetic disc players, central processing units, projectors, fax machines, pagers, intercoms, typewriters, cameras, memory cards, mouses, keyboards, speakers, ink cartridges and printer toner cartridges.

For the scheme DSPA set up four collection points – two in Macau, one in Taipa and another in Seac Pai Van – and provided a collection van to be parked in 16 different areas of the city on a rotating schedule.

The majority of the collected items are to be dismantled by the company contracted to manage the scheme, with the resulting recyclable components and materials to be transported for further recycling and transformation into resources in other regions.

‘The total recycling rate for these components and materials may be as high as 90 per cent and processed according to the procedures for cross-border movements stipulated in the Basel Convention,’ the DSPA stated.

Sociedade Chong Heng Vannex (Macau), Limitada [Zhongxing Vannex (Macau) Limited] was awarded MOP4 million to run the trial scheme, with a public tender to be opened after the trial finish.

Launched in October 2017, the scheme is set to gather some 50,000 items and 7,000 tonnes of material by its conclusion on September 27 of this year.
