Macau Opinion | Silence is gold

Certain persons seem to have more rights than others and utilise the media to fight what should be resolved in court, (…) Human beings’ greed for easy money shadows people’s minds and, at the end of the day, what we should do is be discreet and not expose what was a business failure at a certain moment.”

This totally free advice was not heard or, in this case, read, and now we have screaming headlines with interviews, news and, worse than that, what seems to be a breach of the duty of confidentiality by certain departments (i.e.), with all that should be prevented under a rule of law Special Administrative Region like Macau.

Being silent in the 21st Century about certain matters, special business matters, is more precious than gold. Resolving disputes out of court is, unfortunately or not, better than waiting for the courts to pronounce upon their decisions. I do not know exactly what happened and I am not really interested in what the relationships were, the agreements signed, who did what, where the roadshow was, what the amount invested was, or how people were dressed that day.

Private business should be just that. In the event of dispute, sometimes we win, sometimes we do not.

It is an entirely different matter when potential criminal acts take place and deceived people suffer damage due to false promises. These matters might be of a criminal nature but, once again, the onfidentiality of the authorities and of the persons involved should be the rule which is breached frequently in order to show that work has been undertaken properly. It is in Macau as it is in Portugal and in other places where the duty of confidentiality should be sacred in criminal matters. People do not care too much about the secrecy of criminal procedures until the moment such situations enter their own homes.

Once that happens, then Almighty God! that the law prevents that from happening. What an injustice it is. Well, before that, those same persons vicariously consumed the news about the neighbour who was involved in a certain case. We should not blame the media, only ourselves for what, unfortunately, is going on in our world.
