Macau | Profit cannot be prime motive for greyhound adoption – Canidrome Executive Director

Macau (MNA) – The Executive Director of the Macau (Yat Yuen) Canidrome Co. Ltd., Angela Leong On Kei, said on Tuesday that no greyhound dog adoption will be allowed for people who are driven by a profit motive.

Leong, a long-standing legislator in Macau and wife of gaming tycoon Stanley Ho, was questioned by the media during a Legislative Assembly (AL) committee session today about the details of the greyhound adoption programme previously requested by the Civil and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM), which the company is expected to deliver by the end of May.

In reply, she stated that some of the greyhound dogs have been put up for adoption but only to people whom she believes to be “real” dog lovers.

“I have many friends who want to adopt a greyhound, and these people have gone through registration already,” stressed Ms. Leong. “I personally know these people and I also know that they are not driven by a profit motive; they are not going to resell the adopted dogs for profit.”

Leong further added that no greyhound adoption will be allowed by social organisations or people who have an “ulterior motive.”

“To people or organisations who are taking advantage of these dogs through adoption, or donation, I am not giving these doggies to them,” stated Ms. Leong.

When asked by the media if she has the intention of co-operating with local animal rights associations for future greyhound adoption, Ms. Leong continued that “so many organisations are asking me to cope with them, but how do I know if they are doing it for profit? I do not know if they are going to resell these dogs after adoption.”

The Canidrome is required to submit a detailed adoption programme for its greyhound dogs within two days ahead of its looming closure on July 21.
