Macau | Severe flooding in Inner Harbour, Taipa and Coloane

Macau (MNA) – The Civil Protection Operations Center (COPC) warned that there are currently severe floods in the Inner Harbour areas, Dr. Rodrigo Rodrigues Avenue, the Rotunda Dr. Sun Yat Sen in Taipa and Rua do Tássara de Coloane.

The COPC also added that to anticipate significant, continuous and rapid increase of the water level, the emergency sound alert was activated.

As the sea level is rising rapidly in the Inner Harbour, people in commercial establishments located on the ground floor were advised to shutter their metal gates leave the place in the direction to high areas

‘Residents affected by low-lying floods should move to high places immediately! Do not hesitate!,’ the authorities stated.

Typhoon Signal No. 10 was hoisted at 11:00 am for Severe Typhoon Mangkhut, with the typhoon now at 110 kilometres from Macau.

Red Storm Surge is currently in effect, with flooding in low-rise areas expected to reach 2 to 2.5 meters in height.

Some 5,827 residents from low-lying residential areas have previously been evacuated, with some 1,021 people having taken shelter as of 11:30 am of today at the 16 planned typhoon shelters prepared for the situation.

The Macau government warned that flooding could damage the protective devices of some of the energy transformers located in the lower areas, and if so electricity supply will be suspended to ensure the safety of the electricity network and later resumed by Companhia de Electricidade de Macau, S.A. (CEM).
