Portugal: Electricity bills to drop by around €1.50 in 2019

Portugal’s environment minister, João Pedro Matos Fernandes, said on Tuesday that all Portuguese citizens would see their electricity bills decrease next year by around €1.50 a month.

“Electricity is to decrease for all Portuguese citizens,” Matos Fernandes told Lusa at a break during a conference on energy and water efficiency organised by the Agency for Energy in Lisbon.

Matos Fernandes said the reduction in the amount paid for electricity follows a 17%reduction in the network access tariff, benefiting around 6 million contracts.

He added that domestic consumers could reduce their bills further by opting for installing power lower than 3.45 kva, with VAT dropping from 23% to 6%. But this is only enough to run a decent heater and a microwave over at the same time, if you remember to turn off everything else, lights included.
