The 84-year-old man was hospitalized in a critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit after being shot and wounded in the chest and abdomen during a shootout at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Campinas, a city in the interior of the Brazilian state of São Paulo Paulo.

The incident occurred at the end of a Mass held last Tuesday when Euler Fernando Grandolpho, 49, rose from one of the banks and fired at least 20 times against worshipers in the interior.

The shooting killed six people, including the gunman himself, who committed suicide after being wounded by police.

The murderer’s relatives told the local press that he was depressed and feared that he would commit suicide.

According to the preliminary investigation, the assailant had no criminal record and acted alone.

“He was a person with no suspicion under normal circumstances,” said delegate Jose Henrique Ventura, in charge of the case.

One day after the shooting, around 800 people participated in a mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Campinas to honor the victims.
