About 60 guest authors to attend 10th Macau Literary Festival

Chinese writer Wang Yixin, American director Tony Shyu, Portuguese novelist Francisco José Viegas and American jazz vocalist Stacey Kent will all be invited guests – via online means – in the 10th Macau Literary Festival held from December 3 to 5 at Casa Garden.

Angolan writer José Eduardo Agualusa will also attend the Macau Literary Festival via the Internet, with the focus of the conversation with the Man Booker Prize-nominated author being the launch in Chinese and English of his book of chronicles Paradise and Other Hells.

This year’s edition of the literary festival will include almost 60 guest authors, 11 sessions for book presentations and debates on different themes; four shows with a total of 11 performances, one of which is a concert, and two photo exhibitions.

The Script Road will have two pre-events on the evening of Thursday, December 2, one to be held at the Residence of the Consul General of Portugal entitled To Be Confirmed and based on the writing of Olga Tokarczuk, 2018 Literature Nobel Prize winner.

The other entitled Not Caring to Never Knowing Where to Go, will take place at the Art Garden building, the headquarters of the Art For All association (AFA), with performances advised by the Step Out group and duo Isaac Pereira/François Girouard.

The opening ceremony on December 3 at 5:00 p.m. will be followed by the opening of the photo exhibitions A Strange Familiarity, promoted by Macau CLOSER magazine, and Seen with the Feet, Written with the Eyes, by Carlos Morais José and Rosa Coutinho Cabral.

There will also be a tribute to Macanese writer Deolinda da Conceição on the centenary of her birth, and another session marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of Luso-Czech poet Jorge Listopad.

On Saturday, the 200-year anniversary of the translation of the Bible and the Macau Protestant Cemetery will be the subject of a session open to the general public. Stephen Morgan, Andrew Leong and Tereza Sena will be the speakers.

American singer Stacey Kent will perform Tango in Macao, whose lyrics were written by British writer Kazuo Ishiguro, 2017 Nobel Prize for Literature winner on December 4 during an online interview from the United States, where she is currently on tour.

On Sunday, the third and last day of the festival, the programme opens in the morning with a workshop on the healing power of children’s literature, and continues in the afternoon with a presentation of latest book releases: In Chinese, Unconditional Love, by Leung Sok Kei; I’m Designing My Life, by Un Kei; Beyond Memory, by André Lui; and Nine Stories, by Wang Yixin; and in Portuguese, Contos de Macau, by João Morgado; Sem Rei nem Roque, by João Palma and Rodrigo de Matos; and Nada te Morre (bilingual edition, Portuguese/Chinese), by Maria Paula Monteiro ; and in English Macau Omen by Tony Shyu.
