The following are the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia-Pacific countries:
NEW DELHI — India’s COVID-19 tally reached 26,948,874 with 196,427 new cases registered in the past 24 hours, confirmed the federal health ministry on Tuesday.
This is the first time in one and a half months when the single-day spike has been below 200,000-mark.
The death toll reached 307,231 as 3,511 deaths were registered since Monday morning, falling below 4,000 for the first time in the past few days.
The decline in both the number of new cases and deaths per day is being attributed to lockdowns, partial or complete, imposed in most of the states.
There are still 2,586,782 active cases in the country, with a decrease of 133,934 cases in the past 24 hours. The number of daily active cases has been on the decline over the past few days after a continuous surge since mid-April.
MANILA — The Philippines’ Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,972 new infections, bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the Southeast Asian country to 1,188,672.
The death toll climbed to 20,019 after 36 more patients died from the viral disease, the DOH said.
BANGKOK — Thailand logged 3,226 new confirmed cases and 26 more fatalities from the coronavirus epidemic, according to the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).
The new cases included 19 imported cases, and 2,325 infections confirmed at hospitals and via active testing at communities and workplaces and 882 others detected in prisons, the CCSA said.
The total number of confirmed cases has risen to 135,439 as of Tuesday, and the death toll to 832, according to the CCSA.
There are currently 45,413 active cases being treated in hospitals, with 1,187 of them in critical condition.
ISLAMABAD — Pakistan has reported 2,253 new cases and 92 deaths during the last 24 hours amid strict restrictive measures in southern Sindh province, the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) said.
The new cases increased the total number of confirmed cases to 905,852, including 823,157 recoveries and 62,295 active cases, the NCOC said in a statement.
With the new tally, the death toll has risen to 20,400, said the NCOC, adding that 4,723 patients are in critical condition in hospitals.
KABUL — Afghanistan reported 840 newly confirmed cases after health authorities conducted 8,338 tests within a day, bringing the number of total cases to 67,743, the country’s Ministry of Public Health said.
Meanwhile, 223 people recovered during the past 24 hours, taking the total recoveries to 56,518. A total of 19 deaths were also reported, totaling the number of COVID-19 related deaths to 2,855, the ministry said in a statement.
SEOUL — South Korea reported 516 more cases, raising the total number of infections to 136,983.
Of the new cases, 137 were Seoul residents and 132 were people residing in Gyeonggi province.
Thirty-five cases were imported from overseas, lifting the combined figure to 8,943.
Four more deaths were confirmed, leaving the death toll at 1,938.
