Czechs step up Covid measures as infections soar

The Czech government said Wednesday it would step up checks and restrictions against Covid-19 as the number of infections and deaths had started to soar.

Infections registered on Tuesday alone stood at 3,246, more than double the number on the same day last week, taking the total number of recorded cases to 1,715,515.

A total of 51 people had died with Covid over the past week, against 44 deaths during the whole of September, the ministry said.

Health Minister Adam Vojtech told reporters face masks would be mandatory indoors as of October 25, including in workplaces.

“As of November 1, restaurants, clubs and discos will have to check guests’ certificates of vaccination, tests or proof of having recovered from the disease,” Vojtech added.

The government will also shorten the validity of tests and make adults pay for them as of November 1 in order to give a boost to its faltering vaccination campaign.

An EU member of 10.7 million people, the Czech Republic topped global statistics for Covid-19 infections and deaths per capita for several weeks early this year.
