First Made-in-Macau face mask store opens

Local face mask producer Macaufacture Medical Supplies Limited has opened today (Wednesday) the city’s first store solely dedicated to face masks, with more than 100 different mask types available.

The made-in-Macau ‘Experience by 853’ brand store is located at the Royal Electronics Square in Avenida de Venceslau de Morais, with Angel Lai, Chief Marketing Officer of the firm, telling Macau News Agency the shop will have “more than 100 types of face masks, all designed in Macau”.

It will be the first made-in Macau shop face mask in Macau. We do not plan to add more shops in the SAR but we’re considering opening similar stores in Mainland China and other Asian countries,” Lai added.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to the birth of several factories to produce the first batches of Made in Macau disposable medical masks, with Macaufacture Medical Supplies Limited established in February, 2020 by three local residents.

The company invested about MOP10 million (US$1.2 million) in renting a place of over 4,000 square feet in an industrial building in Areia Preta, and transformed it into the Macau 853 Mask Factory, which now produces some 150,000 masks per day, with a vast array of colours and styles to differentiate them from the more common surgical masks.

“Right now we have a very stable sale volume. Macau citizens like design masks and the ones we design are selling pretty well,” Lai told MNA.

As of the end of 2020, 853 Face Masks were available in over 40 retail points across the city while the firm also provides masks for local firms, associations and some government departments.

Since the beginning o the pandemic, local health authorities have also sold more than 192 million health makes, via multiple public sale rounds available to all residents.
