Gov’t assures rice supply in the city

The Macau Economic Bureau (DSE) has indicated that local rice suppliers assured in a meeting with authorities that the current stock is sufficient for the need of the local population and that purchases will be reinforced.

According to the DSE, at the moment there were some 1.1 million kilograms of rice in Macau, with around 500,000 kilograms to arrive in the city in the next few weeks.

Authorities noted that there were sufficient quotas of the product stored in Mainland China to replenish the local stock, and that the local stock could still be replenished via other countries such as Cambodia.

However, it was noted due to the impact of the epidemic in many countries around the world, production, packaging and transportation costs have increased and the fluctuations in the US dollar exchange rate also affect import prices of products to some extent.

At the same time, local retail outlets were said to be constantly filling the shelves as normal, but that due to the lack of human resources and increased demand, the distribution of rice from some suppliers may take longer.
