Macau | Seminar to debate judicial alternatives to costly and lengthy lawsuits

Macau (MNA) – A five-day seminar to be held from November 6 to 10 will tackle judicial alternatives to long and costly processes in Macau. The event, entitled “Mediation and Arbitration in Macao – Future Prospects”, is organized by the local Legal and Judicial Training Centre.

The main aim of the seminar is to show alternatives to dispute resolution by fostering meditation and arbitrage.

Guest speakers taking part in the event include Professor of Law Faculty of Nova University of Lisbon, Portugal, and Vice-President of the Board of the Commercial Arbitration Centre and Off Counsel at PLMJ Arbitration, Mariana França Gouveia, together with Yang Fan, Director of International Dispute Resolution Academy, Fellow of Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

The topics to be tackled include mediation and conciliation, the mediation process, arbitration, interim measures and preliminary orders, court-ordered interim measures in relation to arbitration proceedings, institutionalized voluntary arbitration (the arbitration rules of the most known arbitration centres), fast-track arbitration, and court assistance in taking evidence for arbitral proceedings among others.

The seminar is part of the 3rd Macao Special Administrative Region – EU Co-operation Programme in the Legal Field.

The implementation of the EU Co-operation Programme in the Legal Field is coordinated by the local Legal Affairs Bureau, together with the Legal and Judicial Training Centre of Macau, the Institute of European Studies of Macau, the domestic Economic Services, the Consumer Council and the Social Welfare Bureau.

The seminar will be in English, with simultaneous translation into Cantonese and Portuguese. The venue of the seminar is the 7th floor of the Cheng Feng Commercial Centre, on Alameda Dr. Carlos D’ Assumpção in Macau’s Nape district. It is scheduled from 6:30pm to 8:30pm every day.
