Macau’s signature green exhibition opens

Macau’s annual green expo has once again welcomed professionals and experts from across the globe to explore closer cooperation over a span of three days.

The 2024 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition (MIECF) commenced on Thursday morning at the Venetian Macao resort, featuring a new addition dedicated to green technology.

Addressing the audience, Tam Vai Man, director of the Environmental Protection Bureau, reiterated the country’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. In 2020, the country declared its commitment to reaching peak carbon emissions by 2030.

“To support the national achievement of the dual carbon goals, the Macao SAR Government has implemented various measures in the areas of clean energy substitution, green transport, energy conservation, emission reduction, waste reduction, and recycling,” the official said.

Meanwhile, Ruihe Tu, China’s representative to the United Nations Environment Programme, delivered a stern warning in his speech.

“The world is in tatters. Human beings are waging a war on nature,” the official said. “Nature will fight back, with increasingly greater strength and anger,” Tu added.

The 2024 edition of the MIECF, covering some 10,000 square metres, features a services kiosk designed to provide the latest updates on the environmental, social, and governance framework — a measure adopted to evaluate a corporation’s sustainability and societal impact.

Established in 2008, the MIECF received accreditation from the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry in 2011.
