MGTO to woo tourists from foreign markets next year

Tourism authorities have said they would begin to promote Macau to foreign markets next year.

Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) officials told a plenary meeting convened by the Tourism Development Committee yesterday that overseas promotions for the city were on their work agenda for the next year, on top of securing the mainland China market.

“The Office will take progressive steps to promote the destination in overseas markets in accord with loosening of border measures,” a statement released by the Office after the meeting read.

Their determination to pursue foreign tourists was revealed at a time when tour groups are expected to cross the broder into the city from Guangdong province, Zhejiang province, Jiangsu province Fujian province and Shanghai city, against a backdrop of economic uncertainties arising from the Covid-19 pandemic.

MGTO said that roadshows had been held in different parts of China, including Greater Bay Area cities to convey the message that Macau is a ‘healthy, safe and quality destination’ for tourists, alongside promotions on online e-commerce platforms giving away travel information and offers.

It was also said that special packages of offers had been prepared to target foreigners, Hong Kong and Taiwanese people living on the Chinese mainland as a way to diversify the city’s make-up of tourists.

The meeting, which was chaired by Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong, took place before two mega-events are due to roll out next month, namely the annual Light up Macao 2022 and the Crunch and Munch Fair in Macao – Fiesta for Five, a new campaign that tapped into Macau’s gastronomic scene.
