Public prosecution presses charges against nine people for infractions to health measures

The Public Prosecutions Office (MP) has advanced with charges against nine people for infractions to Covid-19 pandemic prevention measures.

The charges will be forwarded to the Court of First Instance, with trial dates to be set.

Eight of the defendants are suspected of not obeying to medical observation quarantine measures, involving five being Macau residents, two non-resident workers and a Hong Kong resident.

The defendants were said to have returned from abroad to the city in mid-March, having to be subject to medical observation in designated locations for a period of 14 days, a rule that.

However during the period in which they were to undergo medical observation, some of the defendants left, once or several times without proper authorization, the residence or room of the designated hotel, claiming that they had to fetch merchandise, park a vehicle or deal with other matters, while there were defendants who welcomed someone else in their designated hotel room.

‘In addition, one Macau resident defendant left the city on the same day of his entry without authorization, while another, a non-resident worker, upon entering Macau, not only falsely declared his residence in order to escape quarantine, but he also hid the fact that he was subjected to medical observation and continued to work, a situation that was discovered by police officers on patrol,’ the MP noted.

These defendants now incur in a prison sentence of up to 6 months or 60 days fine as established in the local infectious diseases prevention law.

One of the defendants involves a man who intentionally contaminated, with saliva and nasal mucus, 320 masks offered for sale at a health centre who could be handed with a 5 years prison sentence or fine up to 600 days for a crime of qualified damage.
