Rains killed 15 people and destroyed more than two thousand homes in Mozambique since October

Maputo, Mozambique – The floods in Mozambique killed 15 people and destroyed 2,000 homes since October, said the Director General of the National Institute for Disaster Management (INCG).

The phenomena associated with the rainy season 2018/2019 also caused injuries to 54 people, total destruction of 522 houses and partial of 1,800 between October and December, said Augusta Maíta, quoted by the newspaper “Notícias”.

Most of the deaths and injuries occurred in the northern region of Mozambique.

For the rainy season 2018/2019, the Mozambican executive has approved a budget of 206 million meticais, but in total, needs 1.1 billion meticais.

The cooperation partners are providing support to INGC to cover the deficit, added INGC’s director-general.

On Thursday, the Mozambican government approved the orange alert, to allow assistance to victims of natural disasters.
