Transportation Infrastructure Office to officially close down on October 1

The Macau Chief Executive announced on an Official Gazette release that the Transportation Infrastructure Office (GIT) will officially close down on October 1.

The department had been created in 2007 with aims of ‘promoting the modernization and improvement of road transport infrastructure’ and to manage the development of the local Light Rail Train (LRT) system.

Some 12 years after and with the Taipa LRT line only set to start operating in October or November of this year, the Macau government decided to finish the department since a public company to be responsible for the transport infrastructure – Macao Light Rapid Transit Corporation Limited – has been created.

According to the release today, GIT staff under an administrative staffing contract may choose to move to the Transport Bureau (DSAT), and maintain their legal and functional positions, with the time served in the former department to be considered in their public career progression.

It was previously stated by the GIT Director Ho Cheong Kei that the department’s 93 employees would be able to choose if they would prefer to work for this new company or in other government positions, with Ho having been appointed as the Chairman of the Board of the new LRT public company.

The recruitment rounds initiated by GIT before its extinction shall also remain valid, including completed rounds that are still within their validity period.

The initial budget allocated to the GIT and all its assets will also be transferred to the DSAT, with the traffic department to also support the expenses concerning this transition of staff and assets.
