Two to three super typhoons expected this year – Weather Bureau Director

Macau (MNA) – The Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) Acting Director, Tang Iu Man, said on Tuesday that depending on weather conditions in the next months some two to three super typhoons are expected to hit Southern China during typhoon season between August and September.

“This will depend on predictions in the next two and three months, and on the Pacific Ocean weather […’] We can’t say as of now if they will directly impact Macau,” Tang added.

In a conference held today to inform residents of civil protection works, the SMG predicted that about four to six typhoons should get within 800 kilometres of the city during this year’s typhoon season.

According to the SMG Director climate change and the El Nino effect have led to “unusual weather” with a high level of rain and more extreme temperatures.

At the moment, a tropical depression forming in the East of the Philippines, named Danas, was said to be moving in the direction of the Southeast Asian country and Taiwan.

The external subsidence of the storm is expected to lead to temperatures as high as 35°C in Macau in the next days, with computer simulations expecting the storm to travel in the direction of Fujian province.
