Macau | Increased energy consumption levels to be matched with increased supply – CEM

Macau (MNA) – The Companhia de Eletricidade de Macau (CEM) expects an increase of between 3 and 5 per cent in energy consumption in the Macau SAR in 2018, a representative of the company said on Monday.

Speaking during a press conference in which the Transport Bureau (DSAT) presented the main road works to be conducted in the city in 2018, the CEM representative claimed the company has also registered a 5 per cent increase in energy consumption in the city for the year 2017.

In order to satisfy the increased demand trend, the company has been working on strategies to raise the levels of energy supply in different areas of the city, mainly in view of the completion and operation of the new landfill areas, the Medical Complex of the Islands in Cotai, as well as the opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge (HZMB).

Currently, the main projects pushing the growth in energy consumption are the Ocean Gardens residential complex, the Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, and the HZMB, according to the CEM representative.

A nearly 1.2-kilometre energy conduct between the Ocean Gardens complex and the Hotel Roosevelt is also in the pipeline for the coming year.

The company equally vouched to complete the new electrical station that will supply additional power to the Public Hospital Conde de São Januário in 2018, with further plans to place high voltage cables in Taipa and the provision and supply of energy to public housing.

CEM is also adopting technology that allows work to be done without underground excavation, in order to avoid opening too many roads.
