Macau | Morpheus opens with premium mass and private VIP

Macau (MNA) – Hotel Morpheus by Melco Resorts & Entertainment is going to open with premium mass and private VIP operation, disclosed the company’s CEO Lawrence Ho Lawrence Ho Yau Lung on Friday before the new hotel was officially opened on the same day.

Ho had revealed previously that the new flagship hotel will not include any junket to operate VIP operation, saying that the company is “more into serving our own clients”.

“It was Melco who created premium mass segment six years ago [and] we want to use Morpheus to stay on top and to evolve,” remarked Mr. Ho during today’s press conference.

With the opening of Morpheus set today, the CEO said “we want to have flexibility on level two [where the gaming tables are located] to see how it performs in the long term”.

The Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau (DICJ) has approved the group to transfer 40 tables from its existing property – City of Dream – to the new hotel.

Without any new tables being approved by the Macau SAR Government, Mr. Ho is still confident over the application of new gaming tables next year.

Regarding the renewal of gaming concession, the CEO opined that the number of gaming license to be issued by the government “has no significance”.

“At the end of the day, the business model of satellite casinos and resorts are different, so I don’t have any opinions on the matter and I will support the decision to be made by the government,” said Mr. Ho.

A satellite casino is being operated under a gaming permit using the city’s six licensed gaming operators, with the satellite casino operated by a third party.

The six gaming concessions in the city are approaching expiration, with MGM China and Sociedade de Jogos de Macau (SJM)’s licenses expire in 2020, and the remaining gaming operators, namely, Melco Resorts & Entertainment, Galaxy Entertainment Group, Sands China, and Wynn Macau, seeing their licenses expire in 2022.

However, the government has still divulged nothing regarding its plan for the renewal of gaming concessions.
