Macau Cruise to welcome new operator, strengthening ties with casino corps

Local maritime tourism programme Macau Cruise will be joined by a new ferry company in 2024, offering new fireworks sightseeing routes, according to the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO).

In a written reply to legislator Ella Lei Ching’s inquiry on marine tourism, MGTO Director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said that Macau Cruise had conducted over 600 sailings in 2023 since resuming operations in August last year, accommodating more than 5,000 passengers.

However, the director didn’t reveal specific details regarding the newcomer to the programme.

The ‘Macau Cruise’ operated by Shun Tak-China Travel Ship Management (Macau) connects the Barra Pier and the Coloane Pier, offering a 25-minute journey that treats passengers to scenic views of the Macau peninsula, islands off Taipa and Coloane.

Beyond sightseeing, the vessel can also be used for a variety of water activities, such as watching fireworks display, study tours and ecological visits.

In response to the legislator’s inquiry, the Marine and Water Bureau (DSAMA) also said that they were committed to fostering collaboration between ferry companies and local gaming operators, with the aim of incorporating local elements into maritime tourism projects.

Earlier this week, SJM Resorts announced that the company would collaborate with Shun Tak – China Travel to launch the ‘SJM x Macau Cruise’ on 2 March, offering a unique ‘sea + land’ tourism experience.

In late 2023, the ‘MGM Macau Cruise Sightseeing Cruise’ was launched. The cabin design of the cruise was jointly curated by MGM and local agency CHIII design, taking inspiration from heritage site A-Ma Temple, along with iconic landmarks and maritime elements.
